###

Garages and storage areas are - interesting - parts of the home, often filled with a variety of items ranging from seasonal decorations to spare building materials. Much like a Garage Sale, that more or less makes it impossible to inventory in a single article. That said, during an insurance Claim or construction project, documenting the contents of these spaces is still crucial to ensure all belongings are properly accounted for.

For this article, we are going to focus on a few things that are in virtually every garage - Storage Containers and things related to Vehicles. We are also going to look through some Holiday Decoration lists because….they seem to fit here. Of course there is a slew of other things typically found in our garages - like tools, sporting goods and toys galore - but we are going to cover those elsewhere in their stand-alone sections. Hope that all makes sense… let’s get organized.

### Types of Storage & Garage Areas

**Attached Garage:** A garage that is directly connected to the main house, often used for parking vehicles, storing tools, and housing various household items.

**Detached Garage:** A separate structure, usually located close to the main house, that serves as a versatile storage space for vehicles, tools, and other equipment. Keep in mind the loose items in here are still covered under Personal Property in your insurance policy but damage to the structure itself will be covered in your the Secondary Structures section.

Shed**:** A smaller, standalone structure typically used for storing garden tools, outdoor equipment, and seasonal items. Sheds are perfect for overflow storage when garage space is limited and are also covered in the Secondary Structures part of your policy.

**Basement Storage:** A storage area located in the basement, often used for items that aren’t needed frequently, such as holiday decorations, spare building materials, and archived documents.

## Wrap-Up

This article provides a partial approach to documenting the items in your garage or storage areas, understanding that there is inevitably way more stuff in most garages. As mentioned earlier, items like sporting goods and tools are covered elsewhere but this should get you started. Of course, a thorough inventory is essential in a claims process and will give you peace of mind moving forward.

A formal request made by the policyholder (you) to your insurance company for coverage or payment for a covered loss.

Secure units for storing tools, equipment, and materials on-site.

Missed spots or areas where the paint did not cover the surface adequately.

Also sometimes referred to as Coverage C in your policy. This bucket of coverage includes everything NOT permanently attached to your home or other buildings on your property. This generally includes items such as clothing, furniture, toys, jewelry, household appliances and artwork as well as some more subtle things such as cash, food and even your identity.

Also sometimes referred to as Coverage B in your policy. This can also be a second section in your dwelling coverage - depends on your insurance issuer. That said, the concept is the same and this bucket of coverage includes everything permanently attached to your property but not your primary home itself. This includes detached garages, sheds, guest houses, fences and driveways. This does not cover the personal property in those buildings (those are in Bucket C)

A small, single-story structure typically used for storage, workshops, or as a garden outbuilding.

Shelving within a cabinet that can be adjusted to different heights.

Ceilings designed to reduce sound transmission by using specific materials that absorb sound.

A sealant used to fill gaps and cracks.

Support pieces used to hold up shelves, counters, or other projections.

Manufactured stones or bricks used for creating walkways, patios, and driveways.

The knobs, pulls, and handles on cabinets.

Rounded handles that are turned to open and close a door.

A textile flooring covering typically consisting of an upper layer of pile attached to a backing, often made from wool, synthetic fibers, or a combination of both. Available in various styles, colors, and materials.

A multi-layer synthetic flooring product fused together with a lamination process, designed to simulate wood or stone with a photographic applique layer under a clear protective layer.

General term for components such as screws, nails, and bolts used to join materials together.

Pieces of aluminum or steel used to prevent water penetration or direct flow in structures, often found around windows, doors, and roofs.

A synthetic material made by bonding together layers of plastic, used as a finish for cabinet surfaces.

Known for its longevity, durability, and resistance to extreme weather conditions. Metal roofs can be made from steel, aluminum, copper, or zinc alloys, and they come in sheets or tiles. They reflect solar radiant heat, which can reduce cooling costs in hot climates.

Pin-shaped fasteners used to hold materials together, driven in by hammers or nail guns.

Also known as a receptacle, an outlet is a point in the electrical wiring system where electrical appliances and fixtures can be plugged in to receive power.
