Pools are a valuable addition to any home, providing fun, relaxation, and exercise. However, maintaining a pool requires various tools, chemicals, and equipment to ensure it stays clean, functional, and safe. Documenting these items during an insurance Claim or construction project is essential to ensure everything is accounted for.

This guide will help homeowners create a comprehensive inventory of the tools, chemicals, and accessories associated with maintaining and enhancing pools.

### Types of Pools

**In-Ground Pool:** A permanent pool built into the ground, often featuring built-in steps, lighting, and various finishes. In-ground pools require a range of equipment, such as pumps, filters, and cleaning tools, to maintain water quality.

Above-Ground Pool**:** A more affordable and less permanent option, these pools sit above the ground and typically come with ladders, pumps, and filter systems. Above-ground pools require maintenance similar to in-ground pools, though the equipment used may differ slightly. Also of note, virtually all pools are covered under the Secondary Structures part of your Policy (except of course for plastic or blow up kiddie pools) unless your above-ground pool is a smaller / portable model.

**Infinity Pool:** A luxury pool design where the water flows over one or more edges, creating a seamless visual effect. These pools often include advanced Filtration and circulation systems.

**Lap Pool:** A long and narrow pool designed primarily for swimming laps and exercise. Maintenance requirements for lap pools are similar to those of traditional in-ground pools but often require space-efficient tools and equipment.

## Wrap-Up

This comprehensive guide provides homeowners with a structured approach to documenting the tools, chemicals, and accessories associated with their pools. As is the case with all of these thought-starter articles, a detailed inventory ensures that everything is accounted for during insurance claims or renovations, protecting your investment and helping maintain a clean, safe, and enjoyable swimming environment.

A formal request made by the policyholder (you) to your insurance company for coverage or payment for a covered loss.

A pool constructed above the ground level, not requiring excavation, and typically supported by a frame.

Also sometimes referred to as Coverage B in your policy. This can also be a second section in your dwelling coverage - depends on your insurance issuer. That said, the concept is the same and this bucket of coverage includes everything permanently attached to your property but not your primary home itself. This includes detached garages, sheds, guest houses, fences and driveways. This does not cover the personal property in those buildings (those are in Bucket C)

This is the legal contract between you (the insured) and your insurance company (the insurer). The primary purpose of this contract is to make your accidental loss financially palatable in exchange for a pre-determined fee (your premium).

The process of removing particles and contaminants from air that passes through the HVAC system.

Chemical used to prevent algae growth.

A measure of the calcium content in water, which affects the water’s corrosiveness and potential for scaling.

A chemical added to the pool water to coagulate and remove tiny particles and clear up cloudy water.

A device that cleans the bottom of the pool by suctioning up dirt and debris.

The sloping edge of a roof or gable.

A device installed in the side of the pool that helps to remove debris from the surface of the water.

A cover used to protect the pool from debris and reduce evaporation when not in use.

A type of pool filter that uses a replaceable cartridge to trap dirt and debris.

A system that can heat and cool by moving heat from one area to another. In the winter, it extracts heat from outside air or ground and transfers it indoors; in the summer, it reverses the process to cool the home.

The openings in a pool or hot tub shell where water returns after being filtered.

A type of septic system that uses sand to filter and treat wastewater before it is dispersed into the drain field.

A pump that operates while submerged in water.

Chemicals used to keep the water clean and free from bacteria and viruses. Chlorine and bromine are common sanitizers.

A valve that controls water flow in a faucet by adjusting the mix of hot and cold water.

A barrier made of wood, metal, or other materials.

A safety device that alerts when someone or something enters the pool unexpectedly.

A movable barrier integrated into the fencing, which allows for entry and exit.

Strong rope used to tie down furniture and prevent it from shifting during transport.

The use of essential oils in a sauna to enhance relaxation and health benefits.

A place in which a person bathes under a spray of water.

Similar to an awning, but often freestanding on a frame, providing shade and shelter in outdoor areas.

A wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances from fixed and mobile devices.

A cover that floats on the surface of a pool or hot tub to retain heat, reduce evaporation, and help heat the water using solar energy.

A durable plastic commonly used in fence construction because it’s weather-resistant and requires little maintenance.

Simple non-flowering plants that grow in water and can affect water quality and appearance.

A circular rubber seal used in fittings to prevent leaking.

A valve that directs the flow of water to different outlets.
