Decks and patios are essential extensions of the home, offering spaces for relaxation, entertainment, and outdoor enjoyment. These areas are often filled with a mix of furniture, Décor, and entertainment items that create a welcoming atmosphere. During an insurance Claim or construction project, documenting the contents of your deck or patio is crucial to ensure all belongings are properly accounted for.

This guide will help you inventory their decks and patios, covering outdoor furniture, fun activities, and various patio items (we will cover pool related items and playgrounds elsewhere), so let’s get rolling.

### Types of Decks & Patios

**Traditional Deck:** An elevated structure, usually attached to the house, often made of wood or composite materials. Decks are great for entertaining and typically include outdoor seating, dining areas, and space for a grill. It’s also worth noting that the materials for the deck itself are discussed in our book entitled Construction and usually covered by your Primary Dwellings coverage in your insurance Policy. The items found on the deck itself (which is what we are covering here) are part of your Personal Property coverage.

**Patio:** A ground-level outdoor area, usually paved with Concrete, brick, or stone. Patios are versatile spaces that can be customized with furniture, plants, and decorative elements to create a relaxing environment. Similar to decks, it’s worth noting that the materials for the deck itself are discussed in our book entitled Construction, however unlike decks, the patio is usually covered by your Secondary Structures coverage in your insurance policy. In both cases the items are part of your Personal Property coverage.

**Screened-In Porch:** An enclosed outdoor space, often connected to the home, providing protection from insects and weather while allowing fresh air and natural light. Screened-in porches often include comfortable seating, fans, and lighting. Coverage wise, this area would mimic “decks” since it is permanently attached to your home.

Pergola**or**Gazebo**:** A partially covered structure that provides shade and architectural interest to a deck or patio. Pergolas and gazebos are often used for outdoor dining or lounging areas, enhancing the usability of outdoor spaces. Similar to “patios”, the pergola or gazebo itself would be covered under your Secondary Structures bucket, though the items discussed below are still Personal Property.

A formal request made by the policyholder (you) to your insurance company for coverage or payment for a covered loss.

This is the legal contract between you (the insured) and your insurance company (the insurer). The primary purpose of this contract is to make your accidental loss financially palatable in exchange for a pre-determined fee (your premium).

Also sometimes referred to as Coverage C in your policy. This bucket of coverage includes everything NOT permanently attached to your home or other buildings on your property. This generally includes items such as clothing, furniture, toys, jewelry, household appliances and artwork as well as some more subtle things such as cash, food and even your identity.

A building material made from a mixture of broken stone or gravel, sand, cement, and water, which can be spread or poured into molds and forms a stone-like mass on hardening.

Also sometimes referred to as Coverage B in your policy. This can also be a second section in your dwelling coverage - depends on your insurance issuer. That said, the concept is the same and this bucket of coverage includes everything permanently attached to your property but not your primary home itself. This includes detached garages, sheds, guest houses, fences and driveways. This does not cover the personal property in those buildings (those are in Bucket C)

A managed area of grass, typically mowed regularly.
